Robin van Persie named Feyenoord head coach

25 February 2025

Robin van Persie is the new head coach of Feyenoord 1. Yesterday at de Kuip, the 41-year-old coach signed a contract that runs until mid-2027. Feyenoord has also secured René Hake as assistant coach for the first team. SEG mediated both transfers.

Van Persie has been part of the Feyenoord family for nearly thirty years. He made his first-team debut as an 18-year-old during the 2001-2002 season. The left-footed forward rose to prominence in England, playing for both Arsenal and Manchester United, where he established himself as one of the world’s best strikers. He also enjoyed a successful international career with the Netherlands national team. Following his retirement as a player, he swiftly transitioned into coaching, taking charge of Feyenoord’s U18 side and the club’s UEFA Youth League team at Varkenoord.

Robin van Persie said: “I am proud and honoured to be appointed head coach of Feyenoord 1. Everyone knows how special my bond with Feyenoord is. I am really looking forward to getting started with the squad at 1908, together with a strong staff, and playing matches in De Kuip, supported by the ‘Legioen’, and achieving successes together.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Kees Vos and everyone at SEG for their years of support and assistance, including in this deal. Kees and I go way back, and it’s always great to sit beside him in the ‘rollercoaster’ and take steps together, both professionally and personally, in the world of football and beyond.”

SEG board member Kees Vos said: “Robin and I have worked together since 2007. Over the years, I have witnessed his transformation from a young, talented player into a world-class footballer. Off the pitch, he also evolved—from a rebellious youngster into an intelligent, humorous, social and articulate public figure. Behind the scenes, our professional relationship developed into a valuable friendship. Not just between us, but also between our families.”

“After his outstanding and successful playing career, I predicted an equally great coaching career for him because, in my view, he possesses all the ingredients to become a top coach. He approached this journey in his own way, starting at the grassroots level, developing his football philosophy, taking time to learn, engaging with the right people, completing his coaching qualifications and carefully making the right steps forward. I am immensely proud to witness his next chapter: becoming head coach of his beloved Feyenoord. Everyone at SEG is ready to support Robin in his coaching journey, both on and off the pitch. Good luck, amico!”

Feyenoord general director Dennis te Kloese said: “We are delighted to appoint Robin van Persie, a true club icon, as the new head coach of Feyenoord’s first team. Robin knows our club inside out and his football philosophy aligns perfectly with our vision at Feyenoord: attacking, well-structured football, combined with courage, intensity and determination. To support Robin in conveying that philosophy, we have found a very experienced assistant in René Hake. SEG has mediated both transfers. I thank Kees Vos and the SEG organisation for the correct, pleasant and professional cooperation."
