Belgian defender Matteo Dams is set to continue his career in Saudi Arabia. The 20-year-old has completed a move from PSV to Al-Ahli SC, a club competing in the Saudi Pro League and the AFC Champions League Elite. The deal was finalised yesterday. Matteo and PSV had already agreed on extending and upgrading his expiring contract, but the promising wing-back has now opted for a new adventure in the Middle East. PSV fully supports Matteo in his decision.
SEG founder Kees Vos comments: “SEG has been active in Saudi Arabia for some time now. Last year, we opened an office in Riyadh and we are building a strong network and brand recognition in the country. We’ve already developed good relationships with numerous clubs, as well as with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns Al-Ahli and other clubs. Al-Ahli approached us in search of a left-sided defender (2004 or younger) who can also play as a central defender. Using extensive data analysis, we compiled a list of players fitting that profile, and Matteo emerged as one of the best candidates.”
“Of course, this is a big step for Matteo. Every major transfer is. Whether you're a 20-year-old moving to the Premier League, Serie A or Saudi Arabia, it's always a significant transition. Your life changes—you’re far from home, playing in bigger stadiums and suddenly earning much more money. In that sense, Saudi Arabia is no different from other leagues.”
“The Saudi football league is growing rapidly, and I am convinced it will soon be one of the biggest in the world. For Matteo, this is a unique opportunity, one that he seized with both hands. In a few weeks, he’ll be playing in front of 66,000 fans—twice as many as at PSV. Today, he sent us a message to express his gratitude and compliment us on how smoothly everything was arranged. This is nice to hear for the SEG colleagues in the field and at our HQ, who all put in so much effort and dedication every day to get these deals over the line.”
