DREAM SEASON FOR GIRONA FC

A club rocketing from second division to Champions League in two years is a feat rarely seen. Girona FC have never played European football before and are in Spain's top division for only the fourth season in their history.

Girona’s journey to the top has been spectacular to say the least. The club returned to professional football (Segunda División) in 2008 after a 49-year absence. In 2017, they gained promotion to La Liga but were relegated after only two years. In 2022, their second year with coach Míchel Sánchez, they returned to the top flight. 

In the 2023–24 season, Girona reached the top of the La Liga table after seven matches with 19 points, the club's best-ever start in top flight football. They continued to perform excellently, sitting second in the La Liga table for months in a row.

SEG talents Daley Blind and Viktor Tsygankov are two key players in this year’s squad. As the player with the fourth-most minutes played, Daley has proven to be a consistent presence in the team’s defence. With six goals and four assists, Viktor has contributed significantly to the team’s success. Antal Yaakobishvili normally plays in the second team but debuted in La Liga this season and so far has had three appearances with the first team.

Girona’s win over direct rival Barcelona on May 4th secured their well-deserved qualification for the next edition of the Champions League. We wish them good luck!
