Robin van Persie head coach of sc Heerenveen

22 May 2024

sc Heerenveen presented Robin van Persie yesterday as their new head coach. The 40-year-old former top striker has signed a two-year contract with the club from Friesland, which currently occupies a mid-table position in the Dutch Eredivisie. It’s Van Persie's first job as a head coach and an important milestone in his budding coaching career.

Starting this summer, Van Persie will take the helm in Friesland. The all-time top scorer of the Netherlands national team and former striker for Feyenoord, Arsenal, Manchester United and Fenerbahçe retired from playing in 2019. After his playing career, Van Persie joined Feyenoord as a specialist and youth coach, most recently with Feyenoord’s U18 and UEFA Youth League teams.

SEG board member Kees Vos has been collaborating with Robin van Persie ever since he joined SEG in 2007: “Robin is building his career as a coach very carefully and wisely. We have been working together for 17 years. I know he has everything it takes to grow into a top coach. He has passion, empathy, he is tactically strong and he is a great communicator. Add to that his experience as a player and his natural leadership on the pitch. I look forward to watching his first steps as a trainer in professional football in Friesland.”

Robin van Persie: “I’m very pleased with my new challenge as head coach of sc Heerenveen, one of the most iconic clubs in the Dutch Eredivisie. I would like to thank everyone at SEG, who once again assisted me both professionally and personally in making this important new step in my career. As always it was a real pleasure working with you all. Looking forward to this exciting challenge and let’s fulfil some dreams together!”
